The core move. Keep your lessons. Change the order of the practice problems. In the trial, both groups saw the same problems; only the arrangement differed (IES(opens in a new tab)).

How to rebuild a practice set (about 20 minutes per unit)

  1. List every problem type taught so far this year.
  2. For each new lesson, assign only the first few problems of the new type in that night's set.
  3. Spread the rest of that type's problems across the next several weeks of assignments.
  4. Fill each assignment with problems from earlier types, so no two problems in a row use the same method.
  5. Remove headings that tell students the method ("Section 4.2: Slope").

Example: one week of 7th grade homework

NightProblems
Monday (new: slope)3 slope, 2 proportions, 2 circle area, 1 inequality, 1 expression
Tuesday2 slope, 2 expression, 2 proportions, 1 circle area, 1 inequality
Wednesday1 slope, 2 inequality, 2 circle area, 2 proportions, 1 expression
Friday review10 problems, one or two of each type taught this semester, in mixed order

Scripts

  • To students: "The first step on every problem is deciding what kind it is. That's the skill the test checks, so we practice it every night."
  • To parents: "Your child's homework mixes old and new problems on purpose. It will feel harder, and it's built to make the learning last."

Four-week try-it plan

WeekDoCheck
1Rebuild one week of homework using the steps aboveDid completion rates hold?
2Add a mixed Friday reviewWhich older types are most missed?
3Give corrected answers right after each setAre students fixing their own errors?
4Unannounced mixed quiz on problems from 4+ weeks agoCompare with a class still using blocked practice, if possible

Troubleshooting

ProblemFix
Students are lost on mixed setsThey haven't learned the types yet. Keep blocked practice for the first lesson, then mix
Homework takes too longFewer problems total. Teachers in the trial reported mixed sets took longer
Parents complain it's "not what was taught today"Send the parent script; show the trial result
Textbook only has blocked setsRearrange existing problems; free platforms like ASSISTments are being used to do this in the replication trial (IES(opens in a new tab))
